I like Scheme too, for most of the reasons that you mention. I do find that it is so minimal that various implementations come up with different solutions to the same problems. I’ve settled on “PLT”:http://www.plt-scheme.org/.
Luckily there is the SRFI process found at schemers.org to help create standards. Also, you might be interested to know that there is an R6RS currently being drafted at r6rs.org.
