My Sites
Universal Timeline Aggregator — Displays Atom, RSS and RDF feeds using the Timeline DHTML Ajax widget developed by the MIT Simile project.
Great Software
Drupal — the best PHP-based content management system around, it also powers this site. The versatility of Drupal is amazing; it lets me create the most diverse kinds of sites and services with a minimum amount of custom coding. In addition, Drupal is built on a solid, well-designed technical foundation which means I don’t have to cringe should I need to extend its functionality for a project.
Lighttpd — Apache is dead, long live Lighty.
Visitors — very fast and straightforward log analyzer. If only all software was this simple.
Ubuntu — Linux for human beings; an excellent desktop operating system based on Debian and GNOME.
Programming Languages
Scheme — the Lisp-derived language I use for most of my personal projects.
Lisp — As Eric Raymond has stated, “Lisp is worth learning for the profound enlightenment experience you will have when you finally get it.”
Ruby — cured me of my Python addiction and got me started on the road to mastering more high-powered programming languages. There’s an excellent free e-book, Programming Ruby: The Pragmatic Programmer’s Guide, available for learning Ruby.
PHP — simple and ubiquitous, it’s a language every web developer needs to know. While I’m personally using PHP less and less in favor of better languages such as Ruby, there’s loads of excellent PHP software (Drupal and vBulletin, to name two) out there, ensuring that it’s not going away anytime soon.
Systems Development
Minix — originally developed by Professor Tanenbaum, Minix is a comprehensible, microkernel-based Unix system, widely used in education; it also served as the inspiration for Linux. I recommend Tanenbaum’s book, Operating Systems: Design and Implementation, for any serious OS hobbyist, and am personally looking forward to the 3rd edition, due out by the end of 2005.
Mega-Tokyo Forums — likely the largest and most active online operating systems development community.
Lisp Machines — made with secret alien technology.
Interesting People
Paul Graham — much of Graham’s lucid and eloquent writings match my own experiences. Graham’s essays inspired me to learn Lisp.
